Bouvier des Flandres The name BOUVIER DES FLANDRES translates to "Flanders oxen-driver".
Bouviers are also known as the Belgian Cattle Dog. Due to the Bouviers great guarding ability, they were popular in both World Wars and as a result, the breed was almost wiped out due to its loses in WWI as a "dog of war". Only some selective breeding insured the survival of Bouviers in the 1920's. In WWII the breed was used for carrying messages under fire as well as guard (alert dog) for the soldier and tasked in finding the wounded. A few breeders managed to keep their dogs during this time and the Bouvier des Flandres were introduced to North America in the 1930's. Current roles for the Bouviers include personal and property protection, tracker, guide dog, police dog, herder and drover and they hold these occupations world wide.
